Narozen 31.5.1953, Praha. Pracoval jako antikvář a od roku 1979 v dokumentaci Divadelního ústavu. Vystudoval divadelní a filmovou vědu. Od 80. let publikoval, a to též v samizdatovém časopisu O divadle. Od roku 1986 spolupracoval jako dramaturg s režisérem Petrem Scherhauferem (Divadlo na provázku, Lucerna), byl hlavním dramaturgem divadelního festivalu zvaného Setkání mladých divadelníků v Hradci Králové a současně hlavním redaktorem tzv. Bulletinu mladých divadelníků, v němž mimo jiné poprvé publikovala řada tehdy zakázaných autorů. V listopadu 1989 vedl koordinační centrum stávkujících divadelníků. Pak na dobu tří měsíců převzal funkci ředitele Divadelního ústavu. V roce 1990 se „bulletin“ změnil na časopis Svět a divadlo (SAD), věnovaný současné divadelní kultuře v Čechách i zahraničí. Po celou dobu existence časopisu až do konce roku 2021 byl jeho šéfredaktorem. Na zmíněný festival navázaly zprvu jednorázové participace (Týden Česko-Slovenského divadla, první ročník Setkání-Stretnutie ve Zlíně, pražský Salón SADistů), pak, od roku 1993 se konající, mezinárodní festival Divadlo, který založil a jehož uměleckým ředitelem, respektive hlavním dramaturgem byl do roku 2001. Podílel se na programu dalších festivalů (Divadlo bez hranic, Divadelná Nitra), v posledních letech zejména na vlastním a nejen divadelním festivalu Ohromné maličkosti. Ten má za sebou dvanáct ročníků a pořádán byl většinou společně s Divadlem Na zábradlí, poslední tři ročníky s Alfredem ve dvoře. Od roku 1999 zhruba jednou ročně coby režisér připravuje scénický náčrt nebo inscenaci vesměs dosud v Čechách neuváděné hry (v divadlech Na provázku, Na zábradlí, Dejvickém, v Dlouhé a v Divadle Kašpar). Jako další formu podpory nové dramatiky inicioval vznik řady her českých i zahraničních autorů, a to i formou mezinárodní soutěže o Cenu Ferdinanda Vaňka. Překládá hry slovenských autorů. Byl řadu let předsedou Divadelní obce, členem správní rady Nadačního fondu Cen Alfréda Radoka ale např. i členem správní a dozorčí rady Dejvického divadla či členem rady Státního fondu kultury. Do roku 2021 by předsedou Asociace českých divadelních kritiků a členem výboru českého střediska ITI. Je nositelem Rytířského kříže – řádu Maďarské republiky a emeritním předsedou Světové šuggballové asociace.

In 1990 the „bulletin“ became the magazine Svět a divadlo (World and Theatre), devoted to contemporary theatre culture in the Czech Republic and abroad. Throughout the magazine’s existence until the end of 2021, he was its editor-in-chief. The above-mentioned festival was followed first by one-off participations (the Czech-Slovak Theatre Week, the first edition of the Meeting in Zlín, the Prague SADists‘ Salon), then, since 1993, by the international festival Divadlo, which he founded and of which he was the artistic director or chief dramaturge until 2001. He participated in the programme of other festivals ( Divadlo bez hranic, Divadelná Nitra), in recent years especially in his own and not only theatre festival Ohromné maličkosti.
